Release of Good practices Migrants and Refugees 2022 Report

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development has released the Good practices Migrants and Refugees 2022 reports. The development of the Good Practices was guided by the109th Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) of the Holy Father focusing on the theme “Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay”. 

The theme, Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay, is used to “ensure that all have the conditions necessary for accessing integral human development in their homeland, without being forced to emigrate” (Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development , 2024). In the report, the Dicastery focuses on the rights and decisions many face in regards to migration. The choice to not emigrate is understood as a fundamental right of every individual "to life, liberty, and the security of their person," that is, to lead a life of dignity in one's country of origin (Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, 2024). 

The reports provide qualitative research in the four regions of Africa, Europe, South America, and Central America-Mexico-Caribbean for the year of 2022. The organization of the reports are categorized based on the different practices in the country and the involvement of diaspora communities. 

The Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa compiled the Good Practices Report for the African region. The report broadly covers geographically, all major areas of Africa, offering through the 40 good practices a glimpse of 24 countries, namely: Comoros Islands, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Angola, South Africa, Mauritius, Chad, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Burundi, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Eswatini, Egypt, Chad, Namibia, Rwanda, Kenya, and Ghana.  The report consists of best practices to ensure universal access to education, 8 proper housing, decent and duly paid work, adequate food, clean water and other human rights and necessities as indispensable goods and conditions for a dignified life.
