Scalabrini Day: Reflecting on Ministry, Impact, and Future Possibilities

Yesterday, as we celebrated Scalabrini Day, we were invited not only to honour the legacy of Saint John Baptist Scalabrini but the day provided an opportunity to revisit the foundational values of solidarity, hospitality, advocacy, and service to migrants, refugees, and vulnerable populations.

A central theme that emerged throughout the celebration was the importance of understanding the lived reality of missionary work in the field. Across different contexts and regions, Scalabrinian missionaries, collaborators, pastoral network partners continue to respond to complex social, economic, and humanitarian challenges. Their commitment to serving people on the move remains a powerful witness to the Church's mission and to Scalabrini's enduring vision of human dignity and solidarity.

Fr Filippo presented his introduction to the celebration, and in this he referenced the ministry report to support his presentation and data he mentioned that over the years, ministry reports have documented numerous examples of impactful and transformative work. These reports reveal initiatives that have strengthened communities, provided support services, promoted social inclusion, and fostered hope among those facing displacement and uncertainty.

At the same time, his presentation also point to areas requiring further attention. While many ministries have achieved remarkable outcomes, recurring challenges have been identified, including resource constraints, uneven programme sustainability, limited capacity for monitoring and evaluation, and difficulties in responding to rapidly changing migration dynamics. These challenges should not be viewed as shortcomings alone, but rather as opportunities for learning, adaptation, and institutional strengthening.

There is considerable potential for greater collaboration across ministries, regions, and disciplines. Enhanced knowledge sharing, stronger partnerships, and more systematic approaches to documenting impact could help bridge existing gaps while fostering innovation and collective learning. As migration patterns continue to evolve, ministries must remain responsive and evidence-informed.

Scalabrini Day therefore serves as more than a celebration of past achievements. It is also a moment of critical reflection and discernment. By examining both successes and challenges, the Scalabrinian family can better understand where growth is needed and where opportunities exist to deepen its mission. Such reflection is essential for ensuring that ministries remain relevant.

As we look ahead, the invitation is clear: to continue building on the strong foundations already established, while embracing the lessons that emerge from experience. The legacy of Saint John Baptist Scalabrini calls us not only to serve but also to learn, adapt, and grow. In doing so, we honour his vision and ensure that our ministries remain a source of hope and transformation for generations to come.
