Informing Migration and Mobility Dialogues and Actions for Enhanced Protection

Date: 25 May 2026, University of the Western Cape

The SIHMA workshop brought together researchers, practitioners, and advocates to explore how engaged research can strengthen migration governance, protection systems, and social inclusion. Speakers emphasized participatory and decolonial research approaches that position migrants, refugees, and affected communities as co-creators of knowledge.

Key presentations highlighted civic solidarity with forced migrants, participatory methods such as WhatsApp diaries and photovoice, trauma-sensitive research with children, and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Discussions stressed ethical engagement, trust-building, informed consent, and the need to translate research findings into practical advocacy and policy reform.
Panel 2 focused on strengthening links between research, advocacy, and action. Presenters examined labour market access for refugees, institutional solidarity, interdisciplinary migration research, and findings from the Enhance Protection and Asylum (EPA) Project in South Africa and Uganda. Participants called for stronger collaboration among universities, governments, civil society organisations, and migrant communities.
The workshop concluded that engaged research should move beyond knowledge production to influence policy, improve protection outcomes, counter misinformation, and promote inclusive social transformation. Accessible dissemination tools, stakeholder dialogues, and community-centred partnerships were identified as critical pathways for impact.
