ICMA World Conference in Taiwan
From 21-25 October 2019, the ICMA World Conference will take place in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. ICMA stands for International Christian Maritime Association, and is a free association of Christion non-profit organisations who work together to improve the situation of seafarers around the world and advance maritime welfare. The 2019 World Conference revolves around the theme “50 Years of Working Together for Seafarers, Fishers and their Families”. Not only will there be opportunity to celebrate the last 50 years of working on ICMA’s mission, but it will also focus on how to continue “working together” in the present and future.
The programme
On Tuesday 22 October, the day will mainly consist of panel discussions understanding and serving the future of the maritime industry, along with a discussion on professionalism in seafarer organisations. On Wednesday, the day is filled with workshops on how to better work together and how to better serve seafarers. Thursday, the day will begin with a talk from the keynote speaker of the conference, Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Archbishop of Manila. His talk is titled “Christ’s call to work together to care for those in distress”. The panels on this day are themed around seafarers and fishers in distress, and on how to improve their welfare.
Human trafficking
Seafarers in distress also include those who are being forced to work, or those who are illegally transported via sea routes. ICMA also fights against human trafficking and forced labour within the fishing sector, along with its many partner organisations. The lessening of these issues worldwide is therefore also a topic expected to be discussed during the conference.
More than 200 guests from ICMA member organisations around the world and partners including governments, maritime industry, labour, and voluntary organisations engaged in the welfare of seafarers, fishers, and their families are expected to be present at the Conference, discussing the past, present and future of their shared mission.
