FILM Screening Events for Migrant and Refugees
SIHMA in collaboration with the SCCT and the St John Parish in Maitland will be conducting a series of film screening events with migrants and refugees. The films that are part of the work by STEPS, a Cape Town-based non-profit media company that works in the documentary space in Africa, connects filmmakers, broadcasters, funders and community-based organizations using documentary films as a tool for social change. The films that are going to be screened are part of their fourth project, the Generation Africa collection featuring 25, medium and short films on the lived realities of African youth, through the lens of migration across 16 Anglophone and Francophone countries of Africa. Specifically, 2 films will be screened as a starting point, the first one “What’s eating my Mind?”, a film highlighting issues of mental health, mechanisms, and support for mental health. This film screening will be conducted in collaboration with the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town at the Scalabrini Centre Hall on Tuesday, 9 May 2023 at 9:00am.
The 2nd screening will be for a film, “Stay Up”, a film portraying resilience and healing from trauma of migrants and refugees. This film will be screened in collaboration with the St John’s Parish and will be held at the St John’s Parish, Maitland on Sunday the 15th of May 2023 at 12:00. The two events will present an opportunity for a conversation with migrants in order to hear their voices/perspective how issues of mental health and resilience are portrayed in the films and also share their opinions and insights around mechanisms and structures for mental health support and resilience support.
We are therefore, inviting all interested migrants and refugees to attend this event. For more information on the details of these two screenings, please refer to the adverts attached.
