SIHMA | Scalabrini Institute For Human Mobility In Africa

Decolonization of Education and Research on Migration (DERM)

On the 27th of March, the Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa attended a seminar at the University of the Western Cape. The focus of the event was for community organisations to share with the international scholars the work they do so that they can network with the scholars who will then link them with similar community projects in countries like Brazil, Chile, Pakistan, Tunisia, India, etc. This was done as part of an international research project titled “Decolonization of Education and Research on Migration (DERM)”.  The project has a network of team members from countries across the globe. This research network has three main and interconnected goals. First, the scope of bringing together scholars from different regions of the world is, (1), to analyze and discuss the multiple forms in which coloniality shapes the broad interdisciplinary field of migration studies. Based on that, we aim, (2), to jointly develop better research methodologies and, (3), better teaching tools to decolonize knowledge on migration.

Invited community organisations, including SIHMA gave 10 minutes presentations on the initiatives that they are currently focusing on. Presentations focused on the context the organisations work in, how the need was identified, strategies being used to address the need and lastly the impact of the programme/project. Presentations were followed up with a discussion session on the status of the Cape Town communities, issues around laws and policies, their implementation, and ways the scholars and the community organisations can work together to develop better initiatives, research methodologies and teaching tools to decolonise knowledge on migration.
