Ethiopia’s Refugees and Returnees Service and UNHCR establish a new site to host Sudanese refugees fleeing unrest

In this article, the UNHCR documents the establishment of a new site to host people that have fled the devastating war in Sudan in the Amhara region following the closure of two other sites, Awlala and Kumer. The site name of the site is Aftit. The article shows the continuous contribution of the UNHCR and its  partners in supporting the integration of people that have fled conflict and persecution.

Sudan: Rainy season ushers in severe floods, worsens plight for thousands displaced by war

Climate change remains one of the contributors to migration and the displacement of people in different African regions. This article, looks at the continuous effects of displacement by war which is further exacerbated by the climatic conditions in the particular area. Thousands of displaced people across Sudan continue to suffer as a result of adverse climatic conditions.

IOM Appeals for USD 18.5 Million to Urgently Aid Mpox-Affected Populations in East, Southern Africa

The continuous spread of Mpox around the world especially in the East, Horn, and Southern Africa is becoming a major concern. This is also a concern among the highly mobile and displaced communities often overlooked in such crises as indicated in this article. This article also highlights the need to urgently raise funds to protect those that are at high risk and to mitigate the spread and the effects in the region.

Refugees discover benefits of insect farming in Zimbabwe

In early 2022, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, partnered with the World Bank and Chinhoyi University of Technology, about 120 kilometres away from Zimbabwe’s capital Harare, to promote insect farming at Tongogara as an innovative and sustainable livelihood activity. The settlement hosts some 16,000 refugees mainly from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique and Rwanda and is increasingly exposed to extreme weather linked to climate change such as cyclones and scorching temperatures.

'Stampede at refugee centre highlights problems for refugee seekers in SA'

The asylum system in South Africa continues to be under scrutiny by different stakeholders including the asylum seekers themselves and other civil societal organisations. This article describes the recent incident at the Tshwane Refugee Reception Centre where 1 person died and 20 people were injured during a stampede. This raise concerns on the safety and treatment of asylum seekers in South Africa.
