Catholic teaching and interventions on the Global Compact on refugees and the global compact on safe orderly and regular migration
Published by: SIHMA - Director Filippo Ferraro
At the forefront of the Catholic Church’s mission is the relieving of human suffering and enhancing human well-being on a large scale. A vital part of this mission is the effort to alleviate the pain, suffering, and exploitation faced by many migrants and refugees. Archbishop Buti Tlhagale, Bishop of Johannesburg addressed the Bishops of the Southern Africa Catholic Bishops Conference in February 2019 and called for an increased effort to stop the exploitation of migrants and refugees. This briefing paper will reflect on the involvement of the Catholic Church in ensuring the well-being of migrants and refugees on the African Continent, as well as delineate the steps taken in inspiring, influencing and participating in drafting of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM) both of which were adopted and endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 2018. The Catholic Church hopes that these successful efforts can serve as a source of inspiration for many entities and organizations in Africa to continue to support migrants, refugees, and people on the move.
