Most of the world's people would welcome refugees into their countries with open arms‚ but South Africans are somewhat reluctant when compared with the global average.The Home Affairs database system that manages refugee and asylum documentation has been down for almost two weeks across the country. Refugees have described their frustration with poor communication from officials‚ standing in long queues‚ and being blocked from doing anything that South African citizens use an identity document to access. Malawi has come under fire from human rights activists for locking up 119 Ethiopian illegal migrants in its prisons. Human rights activists faulted the southern African nation for its policy of jailing immigrants who were arrested over illegal entry and travelling without documents.

Asylum seekers might soon have to reveal details of their personal finances and educational qualifications to the South African authorities before their applications will be considered. The EU's top court has ruled that refugees who claim asylum on the grounds that they are homosexual should not have to undergo tests to prove it. Several hundred Christians have been living in the concrete skeleton of a three-storey shopping centre in Iraq’s Kurdish region since Islamic State militants overran their home town of Qaraqosh, east of Mosul. Global total of 348,000 migrants have embarked upon dangerous sea journeys to escape conflicts or economic hardship so far this year, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said on Wednesday. Nearly 4,300 of them have died during those journeys. Suspected Boko Haram militants have struck in two state capitals in north-east Nigeria, with suicide attacks by female bombers in Maiduguri. A boat carrying African migrants has sunk off Yemen's western coast, killing 70 people.
