South-South migration: Country profile

September 30, 2015 2:00 pm Published by Comments Off on South-South migration: Country profile

In 2013 the number of international migrants who were born and residing in the South was approximately 82.3 million. This is slightly higher than the 81.9 million of international migrants born in the South and living in the North (UNDESA).

The Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa (SIHMA) has selected four countries (South Africa, Angola, Ghana and Nigeria) in a research pilot study to produce country profiles and highlight South-South intra-regional migration patterns. These reports provide an updated collection of data and statistics to support governments in planning and producing informed migration policies.  The profiles include information on:

  • Historical background
  • Policy and legislation
  • Contemporary trends in migration
  • Main actors involved in migration management
  • Migration in practice and key research gaps
