For the 102nd World Day of Refugees and Migrants, Pope Francis published a message titled, “Migrants and refugees challenge usWrd1. The response is the gospel of mercy”. He states strongly that migrants and refugees are “our brothers and sisters in search of a better life, far away from poverty, hunger, exploitation and the unjust distribution of the planet’s resources, which are meant to be equitably shared by all.” On June 19, the Johannesburg Archdiocese, in partnership with its Department of Pastoral care for Migrants and Refugees, the Bienvenue Shelter and the Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS), commemorated World Refugee Day with an event held at the St Patrick`s Catholic Church in La Rochelle, part of the Southern Deanery. The event, featuring a number of speakers and performances, kicked off with a brief overview of the current climate around issues pertaining to refugees and migrants in the city of Johannesburg by Fr. Sergio Durigon, parish priest at St Patrick`s church.
