The theme for the fourth round table discussion is “Migration, sustainable development and climate change.” Topics to be discussed:
- Internal migration processes in South Africa;
- Migration, sustainability, development and climate change;
- Needs and vulnerability of migrants in South Africa;
- Human rights and social cohesion;
The directive to conduct the roundtable discussions on migration and urbanisation has come from the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Population Policy. The collaborative partners with Statistics South Africa and the Department of Social Development are the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the Department of Human Settlements and the South African Local Government Association. The IMC has recommended convening a National Migration and Urbanisation Forum with government, researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders to address key migration challenges facing South Africa.
