Mapping foreign children in care
From January to February 2015, the Scalabrini Centre, in partnership with the University of the Western Cape, embarked on a study of the cases of foreign children placed in Child- and Youth Care Centres across the Western Cape Province. The presentation will outline the findings of this study, which has sought to map and quantify the number and demographics of foreign children placed in residential care. The paper further analyses the circumstances around migration and the subsequent placement in care, it explores possible documentation solutions for unaccompanied and separated migrant children in the context of the existing legal framework, and looks at the challenges around family tracing and reunification.
What’s HIV got to do with it? Cross-border migrants accessing health services
South Africa is home to nearly two million cross-border migrants many of whom travel great distances at considerable cost in search of a better life. Once in South Africa they often live precariously and exposed to health risks, including HIV. Access to healthy living conditions to health care services and especially to continuity of care is poor for migrants in general- including those who move within the country- and for cross-border migrants in particular.
Seminar on Migration in Nigeria
Upcoming SIHMA Seminar at the University of Lagos. SIHMA, in collaboration with the department of History of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), will be organizing a dissemination seminar on migration in Nigeria.
International Conference on Migration in Africa
The International Conference on Migration in Africa (ICMA) hosted by the Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa (SIHMA) and the Institute for Social Development at UWC, will bring together local, African and international scholars, academics, researchers, practitioners, professionals, policy makers and NGO representatives and funding bodies to discuss issues relating to human mobility in Africa, including south-south migration, the nexus between migration and development and irregular migration. SIHMA will also be presenting their recent four country research on innovations, concerns and practical challenges as experienced in Ghana, Nigeria, Angola and South Africa.
